Handling Money

Great care must be exercised when handling cash to ensure that staff remain secure; that the cash itself is kept safe; and that there are adequate records to control its receipt, holding, and transfer. In a workplace where cash is handled the threat of robbery or attack is more likely. Individuals handling or managing cash, credit cards, or receipts should receive annual refresher training on safe practices.

TIPS

Always:

  • Handle money at a location away from entrances and exits.

  • Keep as little cash in the cash register as possible.

  • Place large bills in a drop box, safe, or strongroom that is out of sight.

  • Use only one cash register and leave the cash tray of the unused register open and visible

  • Vary the time and route for making deposits.

  • Look for anyone who appears to be loitering in or around the area. If they do not leave, call the security and ask for a patrol check.

Do Not:

  • Avoid making bank deposits at night.

  • Don’t carry money in bags marked with the company logo or that make it obvious that cash is being transported.

  • Do not stare at a person. Prolonged eye contact may be perceived as a challenge or threat.

  • Do not wear jewelry that could be a strangulation or theft hazard.

  • Do not use the back entrances to let people in.

  • Do not leave by exiting into poorly lit, unobserved areas.
